Year 3

In Year 3 our first topic is Scrumdiddlyumptious. We go to Cadbury World to learn all about the history and production of chocolate. The children will have the opportunity to design their own chocolate bar and taste some unusual foods. We will be studying Charlie and the Chocolate factory using the original film and the book to inspire our writing.

Our next Cornerstones topic is Gods and Mortals where we will be learning about mythical creatures. We will be learning all about tribes in our topic Tribal Tales and using the film Kubo and the Two Strings as a stimulus for our literacy. In Heroes and Villains we will study both fictional and real-life heroes and villains from Florence Nightingale to Bonnie and Clyde. Using Dodie Smiths’ A Hundred and One Dalmatians, we will discover what makes Cruella DeVil and other villains so villainous, and we will visit Birmingham Dog’s Home to see the heroic jobs carried out by charities every day. We will also learn all about predators and look at the tragedy of Pompeii in our topic Tremors.

In Science we learn about all about animals including humans, rocks, light, plants and forces. We will be carrying out lots of scientific experiments and observations. We also take part in lots of outdoor learning when we study plants. We will record our observations in a variety of ways.

Children take part in a wide range of PE activities, including swimming at Lindon Road Swimming Baths. During our Commando Joe sessions we will be developing our team building skills whilst learning about the life and experiences of the explorer Bear Grylls.
