Year 2

In Year 2 we cover some fun and exciting topics. These include:

  • Land Ahoy!
  • Bounce
  • Muck, Mess and Mixture
  • Towers and Turrets
  • Wriggle and Crawl
  • Beach Combers

During our Land Ahoy topic, we will be getting our sea legs on! We will navigate, investigate and explore the world - just like Pirates did! We will make a ship, sink a ship and fly a pirate flag.

Bounce - Throw it, catch it, roll it, bounce it! BOING, BOING. We will devise our own games and write instructions for someone else to play it. We will create a sporting challenge day.

Muck, Mess and Mixtures - let’s get messy! Dive in and get your hands and feet all sticky and covered in paint! We will write recipes and instructions. We will create a new gallery space.

In the topic Towers, Tunnels and Turrets we will be able to explore what castles were used for and what they look like.

Wriggle and crawl will provided us with the opportunity to observe the bugs around us. We have a visit from Zoolab who bring unusual insects into our classrooms for us to look at and handle. We will link our other subjects to this topic too.

In Beachcombers we will look at life at the seaside. We will look at how the seaside has changed over the years and what creatures live at the beach.

In literacy we learn how to write for a range of purposes. These include stories, poems, instructions, explanations and other non-fiction genres.

To help us with our spellings we use the No Nonsense Spelling scheme and learn our spellings every day in school. We take our test on Friday mornings.

Every day we enjoy phonics and reading through Read Write Inc. This helps us to read new words and gain higher comprehension skills. Children can take a levelled reading book, a Read Write Inc book and a free choice book home too. We will also have a focus author each half term. Our author in Autumn one is Allan Ahlberg. Ask your children about the books he has written and what their favourites are.

We are enjoying the new curriculum science topics. We learn about animals including humans, plants, living things and their habitats and uses of everyday materials.

In Numeracy, children are able to consolidate their number work, focusing on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We also introduce the importance of learning our times tables, and by the end of the year we expect every child to know their 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables. We also learn to name different 2D and 3D shapes and identify their properties, along with looking at fractions and statistics. Every week children complete an arithmetic test and times table test.

Every child in Year 2 has the opportunity to take part in our Christmas production, class assemblies and Inspire workshops.
