Year 1

In Year 1 we cover lots of exciting topics, these include; Paws, Claws and Whiskers, Dinosaurs, Rio de Vida and Superheroes.

In our Paws, Claws and Whiskers topic we will learn all about different animals and how they are different to humans. We will learn how to identify lots of different animals and how to care for different them.

In our Dinosaur topic we learn all about the different types of dinosaurs that have been found, the differences between herbivores and carnivores and the environment they would have lived in. We also learn about Mary Anning, the lady who first found dinosaur fossils, and how this has changed the way dinosaur fossils were found.

As part of our Rio topic we will explore Brazil and their carnivals and compare it to our local environment. We will learn about the rainforest and the different animals that live there.

During our Superheroes topic, our focus will be to rescue the planet from evil villains. The children will focus on describing their superheroes, creating comic strips and fact files. We will be drawing and modelling superheroes as well as focusing on the human body and what we need to stay healthy in order to be a great superhero.

We send home a list of spellings every week and take our spelling test on a Friday morning. We also send Literacy homework out on a Tuesday, to be returned on a Friday, and Numeracy homework out on a Friday, to be returned on a Tuesday.

Every day we enjoy phonics and Guided Reading lessons. Children can take a levelled reading book home as well as a free choice book.

Every child has the opportunity to take part in our Christmas production, class assemblies and Inspire workshops.
